I REFER to the letter “Gay lifestyle not welcome in our society” (The Star, March 22).

I agree with the writer that updating the law for gay rights is definitely not in the picture for this country. We all must respect that.

However I do not share his or her sentiment of calling it a perverse lifestyle. It is the writer’s right to perceive it as such but it is also a person’s choice to lead the life that he or she has chosen. Not all gays are flamboyant and perverted and not all straight people are sane and morally right too.

What it boils down to here is tolerance to differences.

Exams not the only criterion

IT IS truly heart-warming to read “Help for weaker SPM students” (The Star, March 20).

I congratulate the Education Ministry, especially Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, for formulating plans to assist the underperforming students.

Many a time, I have categorically emphasised my opinion that examinations are just one way of assessing a student.

Failing in examinations or getting poor or low grades doesn’t mean that the student has failed in his life.

The bulk of students today fall into this category i.e. failed their examinations or achieved low grades in examination.

First of all, classifying them as weak students is an unfair assessment. They may be weak academically, but may have bright minds to do business or bright hands to do craftwork, or skills like motor mechanics.

We should not always think about the so called “bright” students only, but rather have programmes and plans to help the other students to be successful in life.

SEREMBAN: In an about-turn, teachers are now prepared to teach sex education in schools — but educationists want proper training first.

This was a drastic change from a stand taken on March 2 when the National Union of the Teaching Profession was against such an education.

NUTP had then said that teachers lacked formal training “in the complexity and sensitivity of the subject and were not confident to teach it”.

Its secretary-general Lok Yim Pheng said the new decision was reached at a recent three-day delegates conference held here.

She added that teachers believed sex education should begin at early secondary education; and the educationists should be given comprehensive training first. “The ministry needs to come up with proper modules and programmes to allow us to impart this to students effectively,” she said.

Lok added that teachers were concerned that they would become open targets for litigation from parents if they made mistakes when imparting such knowledge to students.

Many quarters, including parents, had urged the authorities to introduce sex education.

Children of mixed marriages do face problems

I WOULD like to refer to the letter ‘A mistake to frown upon mixed marriages ‘’ (The Star, March, 9.)

I can’t agree with the writer in using Tiger Woods, Halle Barry and Barack Obama for comparison, stating that their success comes from a product of mixed marriages.

Please don’t forget that the three persons come from the strongest country in the world.

That said, I would like to congratulate Datuk Nicol David, one of our most successful sportswomen in the world who is of mixed parentage as well.

The writer said he couldn’t agree with Datuk Seri Rais Yatim that children from mixed marriages face unique problems. He said it was a myth. How would he know if he is not a product of a mixed marriage himself?

Honestly, I'm worried sick over things that happened around me.

It's very rare and uncommon nowadays to read, hear or see good events in newspaper, radio and on TV. Crime cases, sad news and negative issues are mostly reported in media recently. What's wrong with modern people? There's no morality at all.

The latest news about the deceased 3-year old little girl really makes me tremble and upset. May God bless her and I badly want the killer to be dead!

8yr-old girl molested, forced to perform oral sex?

KUALA LUMPUR: An unemployed man pleaded not guilty to molesting an eight-year-old girl and forcing her to perform oral sex on him.

Jamil Samad, 42, is alleged to have used criminal force on the Year Two pupil and rubbing his private parts against her buttocks.

If convicted, he can be jailed up to 10 years, fined or whipped or face any two of such punishments under Section 354 of the Penal Code.

He is also accused of putting his private parts into the girl’s mouth against her will.

If found guilty, he can be jailed up to 20 years and whipped under Section 377C of the Penal Code.

Jamil is said to have committed both offences at the staircase area at PPR Cochrane Perkasa in Jalan Nakhoda Yusuf, Cheras at 4.30pm on May 12 last year.

The girl’s 41-year-old mother had lodged a complaint over the incident later.

Upon hearing his charges Monday, Jamil, clad in striking red-checkered shirt and blue jeans, calmly said he wanted to claim trial.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurfaida Mohd Rashidee said the prosecution has no intention to offer bail to the accused.

“If the court intends to use its discretion, the prosecution offers bail of RM15,000 in one surety,” she applied Monday.

DPP Nurfaida said the prosecution also pressed for the court to impose an additional bail condition that the accused should not disturb their witnesses as they were staying near the same area.

Upon queried by Sessions Court judge Mohamad Sekeri Mamat, Jamil said he had nothing to say over his bail application.

The judge then allowed a bail of RM15,000 in one surety and ordered him not to disturb the victim.

“If there is any complaint that you have disturbed the victim, then your bail will be revoked,” warned the judge.

He set April 5 for mention to allow the accused to appoint a lawyer.

Hello reader, visitors and strangers!

How's your weekend? Hope all of you got something in mind. I'm planning to just stay at home since I already went out yesterday for the whole day with a bunch of crazy friends. Heee...

For the first time in my life, I went to Jom Heboh! It's held at Bukit Jalil for 2 days, until today. Our main plan was actually to catch a movie at OU but since one of my friends bought tickets for late afternoon screening, so we decided to do something else.

Cindy was the one who came up with the idea of going to Jom Heboh. We finally agreed, though we had no idea what we could do there. Frankly, it was fun! Farah tried her luck as a newscaster since there was an audition at Buletin Utama booth. She did okay I guess, but a bit clumsy. =p

For those of you out there who live in KL or Selangor, you can come to Jom Heboh event if you have nothing to do for this whole Sunday. I bought many things, mostly food. Heee... If you like Malaysian stars, you can meet them there also.

Have fun!

Cuepacs concerned about 'female dominance'

KUALA LUMPUR: Cuepacs is concerned about the increasing dominance of female employees in the civil service as it will have long-term implications on the progress and growth of the country.

Its secretary-general, Ahmad Shah Mohd Zin, said today that the trend now was that more and more women officers were being appointed to important decision-making posts.

For example, almost three quarters of the new posts in the administrative and diplomatic service were being filled by women, he said, adding that this was contrary to the present government policy to reserve only 30 percent of decision-making posts for women.

The teaching profession was also dominated by women, he added.

According to Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam, the ratio of male and female teachers was 30:70.

Ahmad Shah said that while Cuepacs appreciated the government's gender equality policy, it nevertheless wanted it to be implemented with great care so as not to upset the balance between male and female employees.

He said both males and females had their own strengths and weaknesses and they should balance each other for the good of the service.

Meanwhile, the National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) secretary-general, Puan Lok Yim Pheng, said that although there were more women teachers, the decision-making process in the education service was dominated by men.

She said women teachers were performing very well and providing quality education to children.

She suggested that the ministry recruit more male teachers in certain areas like sports, physical education, and co-curriculum, saying that the ideal would be a 50-50 ratio for male and female teachers. - Bernama

Graphic designer pleads not guilty to insulting Johor royals

SEREMBAN: A 29-year-old blogger pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here to insulting the Johor royal house by posting derogatory remarks on his blog.
Graphic designer Khairul Nizam Abd Ghani (pix), from Rumah Rakyat Pancor in Paroi near here, allegedly uploaded the remarks on his blog adukataruna.blogspot.com.my between 7.25pm and 9.05pm on Jan 22.
The accused, wearing a round-collared beige T-shirt and black track bottoms, was calm when the court interpreter read him the charge yesterday.

He was accused of the improper use of network facilities or network services, as provided under section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act.
The charge also states that the intention of the accused had been to hurt the feelings of the Johor royalty and the people.
Under the section, any person who knowingly initiates the transmission of any comment, request, suggestion or other communication which is obscene, indecent, false, menacing or offensive in character with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass another person is liable to a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to one year.
He will also be liable to a further fine of RM1,000 for every day during which the offence is continued after conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Masri Mohd Daud asked the court to impose a RM10,000 bail pending a re-mention of the case.
Counsel for the accused, Mohd Radzlan Jalaludin said the court should impose the lowest amount possible as Khairul Nizam had surrendered to the authorities.
“My client got married only last month and the kenduri (wedding feast) will be held tomorrow (Saturday). If the bail is not lowered, his wife will have to be seated on the dais alone,” he said.
Mohd Radzlan said Khairul Nizam’s wife was only able to raise RM5,000.
“In fact, the allegations are also not as serious as they are made out to be. I hope the court will grant our request,” he said.
Judge Zamri Bakar then admonished Mohd Radzlan for saying the allegations were not serious.
“We are talking about a royal institution which, among others, ensures the stability of our country. I do not agree with the view of the counsel on this,” he said.
Zamri then set bail at RM5,000 with one surety and fixed the case for re-mention on March 31.
Khairul Nizam was detained by the Kota Baru police on Tuesday.

It's a sensitive issue.

RM5bil a year needed by 2013 for higher education fund

PUTRAJAYA: The National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) requires RM5 billion a year to ensure those qualified to pursue higher education are not deprived of the opportunity, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said.
He said the amount was required following an increase in the number of students pursuing higher education.
"At the moment, the allocation is RM3 billion but the ministry foresees that the amount will no longer be enough by 2013," he told reporters after opening the "Real Undergraduate Conference" here on Saturday.
He said the amount was also needed as the loan repayment by students was made in instalments and not in lump sum.
"Now the ministry is studying how to make the PTPTN sustainable and that to ensure loans are given only those who really need them," he said.
He added that well-to-do parents should take the responsibility to finance their children's education and not rely on the government alone.
"The Government has provided the infrastructure and other facilities. Those who are rich should be able to finance their children's education," he said. - BERNAMA

The highlighted sentence makes me remember some of my friends who come from a wealthy family but applied for PTPTN.
I once asked them why and their answer: FOR FUN. Very funny hah?
Many unlucky people especially those who face financial problem need the money.
If you and your family have much money, don't apply, use own money instead.
What say you?

Remember the other day I told you that I wanted to blog on something in our mother tongue?
Here's the entry.
A million apologies if the title sounds controversial, but frankly, I never mean to be rude or racist.
I befriend all people from all ethnic groups, I never put a racial boundary in friendships.
Okay, back to my first intention i.e. to write in Malay.
I really hope I can convey my message clearly.
But, can I use both languages? Just allow me to do so, okay?
One fine day, a happy day I shall say, I went to fetch a friend at the LRT station.
While waiting for her, I saw a man who looked like a father and husband.
I guessed his age, perhaps around 30s.
Saya rasa dia mahu jual kuih-kuih.
Muka lelaki berniaga nampak sedih.
Walaupun tak tahu hal sebenar tapi saya rasa sangat marah.
Hati saya sangat sedih sewaktu lihat lelaki peniaga angkat kembali barang-barangnya.
Saya terus bertanya kenapa lelaki peniaga angkat barang-barangnya selepas mereka datang berjumpa dia.
